Tropical Storm Nona enters PAR

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Tropical Storm Nona (international name Melor) has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) Saturday, December 12, according to state weather bureau PAGASA.
At 4 am Saturday, the center of the tropical storm was located 1,110 km east of Maasin, Southern Leyte.
It has maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (km/h) near the center, and gustiness of up to 80 km/h.
It is moving west northwest in direction at a speed of 25 km/h. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected within the 100-km diameter of Nona.

Independent local weather organization Weather Philippines said Nona could become a typhoon on Sunday, December 13.
Based on the organization's independent forecast, the tropical storm "may pose a serious threat to Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas early next week."
Nona is expected to enhance the northeast monsoon, bringing occasional rainshowers with some thunderstorms across the northern and eastern sections of Luzon beginning next week.
Residents along Eastern Luzon and Southern Luzon, including Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas, should closely monitor the tropical storm, Weather Philippines said in its 7 am update.
Below are forecast positions for the next 5 days, according to PAGASA:
  • Sunday morning - 580 km east of Catbalogan City, Samar
  • Monday morning, December 14 - 370 km east of Sorsogon City, Sorsogon
  • Tuesday morning, December 15 - vicinity of Virac, Catanduanes
  • Wednesday morning, December 16 - 250 km west of Virac, Catanduanes
  • Thursday morning, December 17 - 150 km west of Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro
PAGASA has not raised any public storm warning signal. The next bulletin on Nona will be issued at 11 am Saturday.
